Tinkering as a way of life

The Two Versions of the BMW K75 Front Brake Calipers

  1. The Earlier Version
    • This version features a distinctive bump on the outer side of the caliper.
    • Uses slightly smaller brake pads compared to the later version.
    • Commonly found on early K75 models, including those from the mid-to-late 1980s.( See table below)
  2. The Later Version
    • Uses slightly larger brake pads, which may provide a marginal improvement in braking performance.
    • Found on later K75 models, particularly those from the early to mid-1990s.

Key Differences and Considerations

  • Brake Pads: While the size difference isn’t drastic, it’s enough to cause confusion when ordering replacement pads. Always check your caliper design before purchasing new brake pads. The smaller “old” brake pad will fit a newer caliper, but it will squeal
  • Visual Identification: If your caliper has a noticeable bump, it’s the earlier version. If it has a cleaner, more open design, it’s the later version.
  • Interchangeability: While both versions fit the K75, swapping between them requires attention to pad and caliper fitment.

Why Does This Matter?

When servicing or upgrading your K75’s braking system, understanding which caliper version you have is nice to know. Because although the narrow pads fit the wider caliper, the other way around doesn’t work. Ordering the wrong pads can lead to fitment issues, unnecessary returns, and potential safety concerns.

Before purchasing replacement parts, take a moment to inspect your calipers and note the key design differences. Whether you have the early or later version, keeping your braking system in optimal condition is crucial for safety and performance.

UPDATE

I can confirm EBC FA171 fit the “Newer Wider” Caliper perfectly
